IELTS Writing Letter Tips and Samples

Letters have a purpose; it could be for any reason formal or personal, it conveys the message. Again while compiling a letter in IELTS or LSAT writing module it makes sense to write a rough draft so that your letter is logically correct. Ideally your letter should be composed of maximum of three to four paragraphs.

First paragraph should be dedicated to the introduction of who you are and the relation between the addressee and yourself. Also the first paragraph should mention the purpose of writing a letter.

Second paragraph could be to explain the situation; depending upon the topic you have to write.

Third paragraph could be connected to second paragraph again depending upon the topic.

Last paragraph is a wrap up of the letter so you should ask or suggest or thank.

Rough Draft before Compiling a Letter (Should take no more than 1 minute of your time). That is how it should look like as below:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Why are you writing a letter? (Specify Reason)
  • Tell them the situation
  • How did it happen?
  • What steps did you take to solve the problem?
  • Apologize
  • Ask for Solution (Provide options)

Here are few examples on how to go about writing a letter in IELTS Writing test.

I lost “Mathematics Differential and Integral” by R.V. Jackson while I was traveling from university to my home. I was really tired after all day of studies and I fell sleep, when I wake up, I realized that my house is near so I picked up my bag and board off the bus. When I reached home I found that I have left book in the bus.

I called the transport authorities and asked if they have found any lost book in the bus, I was traveling. Response was not positive.

I am worried about it now. Could you please guide me what should I do in regards to this problem. Do I have to pay for the book or can I buy the book and return it to library? Please help me out in this situation as I do not want to lose my membership in this library.

My name is — and I am working in your prestigious company for last 5 years. My reason for writing this letter is to inform you that recently I studied financial records of our company and found out some concerns in our company’s strategy plans for future.

As we know that our company was established in 1980′s and used to trade only shares and securities, but recent developments in stock markets have led our company to loss. The main reason for that is the invent of option trading. Our company focuses on only share trades. Nowadays, investors want to invest in options and also in stocks to take out maximum profits. I suggest that our company should start to trade options as well as foreign exchange, which will definitely improve our company’s image and profits.

I also suggest that we should endeavor more on issue of online platform for trading the options and stocks in securities markets. Once this automatic online platform is complete, traders can place their orders by themselves without any assistance, which will cut our working time by one third.

Sincerely,                                                           Dated

Write a letter to sports centre manager complaining about some problems you face when you go to sports centre. Do not use more than 150 words.

My name is — and I am a new entrant in your sports centre. My reason for writing this letter is to inform you that I am concerned about my safety and safety of others while I travel from my place to your sports centre.

As you might know that this sports centre is far from Norwood suburb and there is no direct bus service from Norwood to sports centre. It takes me two hours just to travel from Norwood to this sports place. Another concern is that there are absolutely no lights whatsoever on the entrance of this place. Lots of students have been injured while passing through unlit corridor.

Not only that this sports centre does not have the basic amenities like indoor swimming pools and gym equipments, which is not good for this sports institution. I highly recommend you to take action on these issues, because the inaction may jeopardize the reputation of your sports club.

Sincerely,                                                           Dated
